along with the winding rivers found in hinton you will find america’s newest national park: the new river gorge national park The National Park service has designated a 52-mile stretch as the New River Gorge National River as a scenic parkway. A beautiful drive along the New River in Hinton leads to Sandstone Falls, a popular tourist destination. In 1990's, a Lassie movie was filmed there starring Helen Slater and Jon Tenney. There is a boardwalk that takes visitors out to the falls for breathtaking photo opportunities.

hinton is an amtrak destination Wonderful year-round activities are available in our area. In the winter, plan to go ice skating or on a horse-drawn carriage ride at the Greenbrier Resort! Amtrak's Cardinal train #50 will take you there. It goes right through our historic town on its route to the Greenbrier Resort (and beyond). The historic train depot is an easy 2 block walk from the guest house. You can plan to visit The Greenbrier and return the same day on Sunday, Wednesday, or Friday. Round trip train tickets are available online and takes about an hour each way (leaves around 10:30 am and returns around 6:30 pm) giving you plenty of time to enjoy a tour of the resort, secret bunker, have lunch at Drapers, and enjoy the evening tea at 4:00 pm. This is an unforgettable day trip! On the AmTrak site select round trip from HIN (Hinton) to WSS (White Sulphur Springs). Train #50 and #51.
lost world caves and caverns is another day trip option About an hour's drive from the guest house, discover the vast wonderland of stalactites and stalagmites that hides 120 feet below the Earth’s surface. Discovered in 1942, Lost World Caverns is a truly magical place. The cavern features amazing rock formations and presents challenges for avid adventurers. The self-guided tour covers a 1/2-mile loop where you see amazing formations from beginning to end. It takes about 45 minutes to complete, and the memories last a lifetime. Make sure to pack a light jacket, sturdy shoes, and a camera to capture the beautiful sights. Temps are a steady 52 degrees year round inside the caverns. Tickets are reasonable for general admission. Open year round but only on Saturday/Sunday in Dec/Jan/Feb/March.
cantrell whitewater rafting - nice float trips down the new river in hinton Not wild and terrifying! Just a slow drift down or take the plunge and go for that wild ride down the New River! Or opt for those more wild Class VI rides with rapids and excitement in the upper New River.
pipestem state park (follow rt 20 North) - horseback riding, lots of trails, nice restaurants, golf, indoor/outdoor pools, beautiful picnic areas, plenty of resident deer! The new waterpark and exhilarating zipline bring loads of fun! The aerial TRAM is one of the greatest things at the park. It takes you deep into the Bluestone Gorge where there is a nice restaurant for dining.
a visit to the greenbrier resort would be one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences! if staying for more than one day, you may want to drive up to enjoy their wonderful breakfast buffet, served in the greenbrier's main dining room until 10:30 am (a magnificent spread of everything you can only imagine (best to get there around 9:30 and make a reservation)
dining is considered a formal affair You may want to experience West 44, a high-priced dining experience that you will never forget. Filet Mignon that you can cut with a fork, the beef cattle are grain-fed and raised on a farm near the Greenbrier. This restaurant is named for Jerry West, #44, basketball star from West Virginia. All his memorabilia is on display there. You will need to make reservations at West 44 or the main dining room if you plan to have dinner at the Greenbrier in order to get a table.
be sure and browse all throughout the many specialty shops and make sure you see the magnificent indoor pool (you can swim in it as a visitor free) The pool looks like something from the Roman Empire, absolutely spectacular with furnishings and an atmosphere you will never forget. When you go through the gate, you will need to tell them you are having breakfast, lunch, dinner or just visiting and they will tell you where to park. A converted old railroad depot has been turned into a year-round Christmas/gift shop with ample parking. A shuttle awaits to take you across the street and onto the Greenbrier grounds. Visit the golf club to view the infinity pool or have lunch at the clubhouse restaurant and sports bar. The bunker is something you definitely want to tour. That was the top-secret (declassified now) underground central command for the President and Congress in case of an attack on DC. No one knew it was there until it was declassified in the 90s and it had been there for decades. all workers were sworn to secrecy at the time it was built and they honored their pledge!
lewisburg, west virginia is another nearby, a historic old town with civil war history and the north house museum There are lots of antique shops and nice dining establishments. We recommend lunch or dinner at the General Lewis Inn or Food and Friends in the downtown area. Visit the Old Stone Church and be sure to see the old civil war era cemetery beside it. The North House Museum (all about the history of Lewisburg) is filled with Civil War memorabilia. There is another civil war cemetery in the woods in the shape of a large cross, the final resting place for 95 soldiers killed during the Battle of Lewisburg.

Summary: We loved staying in such a lovely home! Everything was beautiful and hosts were so thoughtful and made themselves available via text, should we need anything. The central location allowed for us to enjoy all that we came to WV for- the hiking and sightseeing- the church was located just a couple blocks away!!! Loved the library/ den to relax in comfy easy chairs!
