alfama is the oldest and most traditional of lisbon’s neighbourhoods Its existence can be traced back to the period of Moorish domination from the 8th century onwards. Its name comes from the Arabic Al-hamma, meaning fountains or baths and referring to the numerous water sources that used to exist and feed various fountains. It spreads along the south east slope that descends from the mediaeval São Jorge Castle all the way down to the Tagus River.
