carmel mission: the san carlos borroméo de carmelo mission, otherwise known as the carmel mission, is one of the oldest spanish missions in california It was founded in 1771 by Father Junipero Serra who is buried on the site along with many native American Indians who converted to Catholicism. The Carmel Mission has been designated a National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service and is an active Roman Catholic Church, holding mass on a daily basis. In addition to mass, the Mission hosts weddings, art and cultural events, and numerous other Carmel community events.
